Volunteers make a huge difference to the work we are able to carry out.  They take on a wide range of jobs and activities in many different departments of the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, the Transport Museum and the Lunt Roman Fort. New roles are being developed all the time. Opportunities for volunteers are advertised here.

Groundsperson

Are you a practical person who enjoys gardening or general maintenance activities?
Would you like to get involved with supporting our team at the Lunt Fort, to help them keep the site grounds maintained for visitors?
 Do you enjoy good physical health to be able to carry out maintenance activities?
What does the role involve?
Under the supervision of the Engagement & Development Manager some of the activities we will require support with are:
general weeding – also supporting the team to tackle more invasive plants
strimming grass and weeded areas
trimming hedges
painting woodwork to ensure weather protection
carrying out fence repairs
helping to clear fallen trees
turfing areas where required
general cleaning and dusting of the indoor space when required

Starting as soon as possible Weekdays (between 9:45 – 14:30).We can be flexible with times.

Skills, knowledge & qualities we are looking for

Whilst some gardening tasks are general and require little experience, we are also looking for some individuals who have a good knowledge of gardening, particularly in weed prevention

Some of the roles will require previous experience in maintenance activities i.e. fence repair and turfing

Good physical health is essential for some activities

Good team player – always looking at ways you can support others

Administration Support Assistant

Weekdays (between 9:45 – 14:30) . We can be flexible with hours.


Are you a highly organised person with good administrative skills?

Would you enjoy getting involved with supporting our team at the Lunt Fort, to support activities with families and schools, to help bring our local Roman history to life?

Are you a team player with a hands on approach, who would be happy to help out in the different areas at the Lunt?

What does the role involve?

Under the supervision of the Engagement & Development Manager you would be required to:

Provide general administrative support such a:

answering the phones

diary management

help co-ordinate and prepare documentation for school/families workshops

help with stock control of the small shop situated on the site

collect data on visitors, retail sales and activities

occasional research projects to support benchmarking exercises

Skills, knowledge & qualities we are looking for

General administration experience – although if you are studying business administration at college this would be a great opportunity to gain valuable experience to support your course

Good personal organisation skills

IT literate with good Microsoft applications knowledge

Good communication skills – both verbal and written

Utilise/gain experience of administration within a small visitor attraction

Gain experience at a historical site setting, learning more about the history of the Lunt Roman Fort

Further develop your team working and communication skills

Develop your organisational and time management skills

Retail Helper

Weekdays (between 9:45 – 14:30).  We can be flexible with hours.


Do you have experience of working in a shop setting with a good understanding of great customer service?

Would you like to get involved with supporting our team at the Lunt Fort, to help them run the shop for visitors to the site?

Are you a team player with a hands on approach to tasks?

What does the role involve?

Under the supervision of the Engagement & Development Manager you would be required to:

Provide help run the shop, such as:

keeping the stock and displays updated 

serving customers and cashing up at the end of the day

supporting staff to sell guide books and collect donations which all support the running and development of the site

preparing goody bags for school visits to the site

supporting the ordering of stock to ensure products meet customer interest

Skills, knowledge & qualities we are looking for

Previous experience working in a shop – able to cash up and operate tills confidently

Strong interpersonal skills – a friendly and confident communicator

Good personal organisation skills

Good team player – always looking at ways you can support others

Reliable and trustworthy

Wildlife Activity Assistants


Weekdays (between 9:45 – 14:30). 
We can be flexible with hours.

Do you have an interest in local wildlife, which you would like to share with others to raise awareness and appreciation?

Would you enjoy getting involved with supporting our team at the Lunt Fort, to support wildlife and nature trail activities with families and schools?

Are you interested in finding out more about how the Romans used plants in their food and medicines?

What does the role involve?

Under the supervision of the Engagement & Development Manager you would be required to:
Research local nature on the Lunt Roman Fort site to help develop nature trails and sign post key points of interest for visitors to Lunt
Research botany to understand more about the plants Romans used in their food and medicines, linking this to the gardens being established and cultivated at the Lunt
Run nature trails and activities around the Lunt site
Skills, knowledge & qualities we are looking for
An interest in nature/wildlife/botany/Roman History
Good communication skills – both verbal and written
Good team working and interpersonal skills, to build a rapport with staff and visitors
IT skills would be useful to document research and develop activity trails

School Helper 

Weekdays (between 9:45 – 14:30) we can be flexible with times.

Please note this role recommences at Easter 2017.


Are you looking to develop your career within an education setting/working with children? Or do you already have a background in working with children?

 Would you enjoy getting involved with supporting our team at the Lunt Fort, to support educational activities with schools, to help bring our local Roman history to life? 

Are you a team player with a hands on approach to tasks?

What does the role involve?

Under the supervision of the Engagement & Development Manager and Facilitators you would be required to: 

  • Meet and greet school parties
  • Help prepare for school activities 
  • Support activities during the school sessions
  • Provide lunch cover for the Facilitators
  • Provide refreshments for teachers when required
  • Handout evaluation forms to teachers and assistants and collate these at the end of the session
  • Help clear up at the end of sessions

 

Skills, knowledge & qualities we are looking for

  • Previous experience of working with children or undertaking training to work with children in an educational setting
    Strong interpersonal skills – a friendly and confident communicator
  • Good personal organisation skills
  • Good team player – always looking at ways you can support others
