Barrack Blocks

Archaeologists have identified six barrack blocks in the area to the north of the Principia at the Lunt. They are long thin buildings made from timber with a wattle and daub infill.

Each of these blocks would have housed a century of 80 Roman soldiers and all their equipment. Often barrack blocks have ten rooms of eight men each, with a suite of two rooms at the end for the Centurion. The blocks at the Lunt have 12 and 13 rooms. Usually each room had sleeping space for 6 men, as two men would always be on guard. In one of the barrack blocks at the Lunt there was a room containing a water tank at one end. It has been suggested that this room was used by the Centurion for washing.
